Somewhere between the Fleetwood Mac tribute and the food truck line at Union Point Park, a pattern has set in. Downtown New Bern's Friday nights aren't a "sometimes" plan anymore. They're a routine, and the routine has rules.
The mechanism is simple once you see it. The city's free Footloose on the Neuse Summer Concert Series runs Fridays at 7:30 p.m., but parking begins at 4 p.m. and is limited. That single detail rewrites how the evening works: dinner has to happen before dinner hour, not after. Once you accept that, everything downstream, from which restaurant you pick to whether you bring the dog, falls into place.
The August And Early September Lineup
The 2026 series is the Trent Cadillac Buick GMC Footloose on the Neuse Summer Concert Series, presented by New Bern Parks and Recreation. Three dates matter for late summer, and they are all tributes, which is worth knowing before you commit a lawn chair to it.

- MJ's Raw Bar and Grille — a downtown seafood spot known for signature crab cakes with Jamaican tartar sauce and a crab pretzel, close enough to walk off with a loop around Union Point Park. Literally the pre-show geometry.
- Baker's Kitchen — a bakery and restaurant in the heart of downtown New Bern. Better for a lighter pre-show plate than a heavy dinner.
- Captain Ratty's Seafood — a restaurant and tavern situated in the historic town of New Bern, useful when you want a raw bar without a wait list.
- Beer Army Burger Company — a downtown spot featuring an ever-changing selection of regional and national brews. Fits the lawn-chair evening.
- Bear Town Market & Beer Garden — known for having more than 50 draft beers, with live music every other Friday night in the grassy Beer Garden, where well-mannered dogs are invited outside. If the Footloose lineup that week isn't your genre, this is the parallel play.
- 247 Craven — owner and chef Ashley Moser uses only locally sourced seafood and seasonal fresh vegetables with a creative twist. Reservations help.
- Bay Leaf Indian Restaurant — one of New Bern's less obvious picks, with Chef Raman whose Indian entrée took first place at the Taste of Carolina competition.
The pattern most regulars land on: park by 4:15, eat by 5:30, walk to Union Point by 7:00, chairs down, done.
When Friday's Lineup Isn't Your Thing

- Movie in the Park. Movie in the Park - Finding Nemo is scheduled for Friday, Sep 25, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at Union Point Park, then Hocus Pocus on Saturday, Oct 31, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. Same lawn, no cover band.
- Something older than any of it. On Aug 22, 2026, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Tryon Palace, Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution and other Patriotic groups mark the 251st Anniversary of the New Bern Resolves, commemorating the first Provincial Congress held in America in open defiance of royal authority in August 1774 at the Craven County Court House in New Bern. A morning event, which pairs surprisingly well with a Friday-night concert the night before.
- Lunch with a subject. Thursday, Aug 27, 2026: Lunch and Learn: August Reign of Terror by Dennis Harper, 11:30 a.m. at the Carolina Colours Pavilion, from the New Bern Historical Society.
